Associated Press source: Rams sign Mike LaFleur

LOS ANGELES ( Associated Press) — The Los Angeles Rams have hired former New York Jets offensive coordinator Mike Lafleur, a person familiar with the decision confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Rams have not formally announced the decision to hire Lafleur, who spent the past two years in New York.

The Rams endured the worst season in NFL history for a defending Super Bowl champion and finished with the league’s worst total-yardage offense after missing several key players. Offensive coordinator Liam Coen left the team and returned to Kentucky, where he will spend the 2021 season as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator.

Former Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell became head coach of the Minnesota Vikings shortly after the Rams’ Super Bowl victory. Coach Sean McVay called the plays when he was in charge and did not have a formal offensive coordinator in 2018 and 2019.

The Jets had one of their worst offenses both seasons under Lafleur and Robert Saleh. He led an offense last year that finished 29th in scoring and 25th in total yards while struggling to keep its quarterback consistent.

LaFleur was part of the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2020 along with Kyle Shanahan, who have beaten McVay’s teams for eight consecutive seasons.

1. LaFleur, 36, is the younger brother of Matt LaFleur, who was McVay’s offensive coordinator during his first season in charge of the Rams in 2017 before eventually becoming the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.
