The WHO released the figures as health officials around the world investigate a mysterious increase in severe cases of hepatitis — an inflammation of the liver — in young children.

As of April 21, severe cases of hepatitis of unknown origin had been reported in the United Kingdom, the United States, Spain, Israel, Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Norway, France, Romania and Belgium, the WHO said. It said 114 of the 169 cases were in the United Kingdom alone.

A common cold virus known as adenovirus has been found in at least 74 cases, the WHO said. It said that among those tested, 20 were identified with COVID-19 infection and 19 cases with COVID-19 and adenovirus co-infection were detected.

The WHO said it was monitoring the situation closely and working with British health officials, other member states and partners.
