MADRID (NWN) – Substitute striker Hugo Duro scored two goals in stoppage time as Valencia reduced two goals to a 3-3 draw with defending champions Atletico Madrid in the Spanish league on Sunday.
Duro entered the match in the 85th and scored in the second and sixth minutes of injury time to give Valencia a home draw.
Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Sime Versalco scored for Atletico, who missed a chance to go within two points of league leader Real Madrid. City rivals beat Rio Vallecano 2-1 on Saturday.
Atlético, who were coming off a loss to Liverpool in the Champions League, finished fourth with 23 points from 12 matches. Sevilla and Real Sociedad, who play their matches later on Sunday, are both ahead of Diego Simeone’s side.
Sociedad visits seventh-placed Osasuna to extend their 15-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. Sevilla Real Betis play in fifth place in the Sevilla Derby.
Valencia, who finished 10th, came from a 2–0 league win against Villarreal that broke the team’s seven-game winning streak.
Suarez opened the scoring for the visitors from inside the field in the 35th, before Valencia equalized in the 50th with their own goal by Atlético defender Stefan Savic. Griezmann put Atletico back in the 58th after a run from behind the midfield line, which ended with a fine strike in the top corner, and Vrsaljko netted from close range in the third two minutes after video review.
Valencia threatened Daniel Vaas to hit the crossbar in the 63rd, then sealed the return with Duro scoring near the penalty spot in the breakaway and then with a header from a late set piece.
Simeone lost back Kieran Trippier to a shoulder injury after an awkward fall less than five minutes into the match at Mestalla Stadium.
Ninth-placed Barcelona lost a three-goal lead in a 3-3 draw at Celta Vigo on Saturday.
In his first match since coach Unai Emery told the club that he was not working with Newcastle in England, Villarreal beat Getafe 1–0 at home with a goal from Manu Trigueros after 10 minutes.
It was Villarreal’s first win in the league after four consecutive no-wins, which included three losses. The victory left the club in 12th place.
Getafe was coming off his first win of the season against Espanyol.
