BARCELONA ( Associated Press) – Dutch striker Memphis Depay will join Atletico Madrid from Spanish league rival Barcelona, the Catalan club said Friday after it reached an agreement to sell the player.
Depay had already trained with Atletico on Thursday with permission from Barcelona.
Barcelona indicated that Atlético agreed to sign him for an additional 3 million euros ($3.25 million) and a possible 1 million euros ($1.08 million) in additions. Atletico reported that Depay has agreed a contract that will keep him in the Spanish capital for two-and-a-half years.
As part of the deal, Barcelona secured an option to acquire winger Yannick Carrasco in the future.
Depay helped his team reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup in December before losing to eventual champions Argentina.
His role will be to fill the void left by the departure of Joao Felix, who was loaned to Chelsea last week, alongside Antoine Griezmann.
Depay, 28, arrives at Barcelona in 2021 from Lyon at the request of coach Ronald Koeman. He started regularly for his compatriots, but was replaced by Xavi Hernandez after Koeman was replaced halfway through the previous season. His minutes fell further this summer with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski and Rafinha.
Behind Barcelona, the Spanish league leaders, Atlético are struggling to break into the top four and secure a Champions League ticket. Their only realistic shot at the title this season is in the Copa del Rey, and they face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals next week.
Barcelona benefits from the deal by reducing their payroll while trying to pay off their debt.
