Australia It became the first country to allow the use of controlled drugs psychedelic substances psilocybin (present in the so-called hallucinogenic mushrooms) and MDMA (which is called ecstasy) was approved by the drug regulatory body in the region as of July 1.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) issued a statement on Friday, picked up by the country’s main media this Saturday, in which both substances are allowed to be prescribed “with the authority of a psychiatrist to treat certain mental illnesses”.
The regulatory body allows the prescription of the synthetic drug MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) for the treatment post-traumatic stress syndrome and psilocybin for brought down which do not improve with other treatments. “These are the only two diseases for which there is sufficient evidence that some patients may benefit,” he said.
In order to prescribe drugs with these substances, psychiatrists must obtain approval from the TGA, which is subject to the judgment of the research ethics committee. The TGA has recognized the “lack of options” for patients with mental illnesses who resist treatment, but warns that controls are necessary to continue the possible adverse effects of these therapies and the use of prohibited substances outside of the two illnesses mentioned.
Although there are no licensed products on the Australian market containing either of these two substances, the TGA will allow licensed psychiatrists to legally source “I reject drugs“controlling them.”
