Australia’s self-defense came into limelight after joining the AUKUS agreement

Australian Defense Minister Peter Dutton on Sunday (19/9) defended Canberra’s handling of a multi-billion dollar submarine contract with France. He described his government as “clear, open and honest” in its dealings with Paris.

France disagrees. French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

“It really stings. We built a relationship of trust with Australia, and that trust was betrayed,” he said.

The controversy can have wider implications. France has said it will not be able to rely on Australia in some talks on drafting a free trade agreement with the EU, although EU officials say talks will continue.

Hervé Lemahieu, research director at the Lowy Institute, an independent think-tank based in Sydney, said France’s response to the AUKUS alliance was unexpected. But he urged French President Emmanuel Macron not to exaggerate.

“It is unprecedented for France, or any country, to summon two ambassadors from two different countries at once. France must be careful not to overreact. French anger is natural and understandable but has to be policy should not be allowed to control. Their foreign country. It is not clear whether [Presiden Prancis Emmanuel] Macron speaks on behalf of the whole of Europe, noting that the rest of the EU is silent,” Lemahieu said.

Lemahieu pointed out that China’s military ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region could also face major challenges from the new AUKUS alliance.

“China will interpret this as an escalation of action. There is no doubt that it will increase the great power competition. Now, the question is, will it create more stability or reduce it? It will increase the competition of other countries in the Indo-Pacific. It will be an important question for him,” he said.

China accused the new alliance partner of having a “cold war mentality”.
