Industry watchdog Exhibitor Relations reported Sunday that “Avatar 2” grossed an estimated $82.4 million this weekend in North America, surpassing $1 billion in ticket sales in record time.
In four days, the science fiction film grossed $440.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $957 million overseas. Only a half-dozen films topped $1 billion in their first two weeks.
Avatar, the first sequel film directed by James Cameron, earned $2.9 billion; a record number.
The animated film “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” finished second with $22 million at the box office between Friday and Monday.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” the blockbuster sequel to Marvel’s 2018 Afro-futurist film, grossed $6.5 million and finished third. It collected $436 million in eight weeks.
Singer Whitney Houston’s biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” was fourth with $5.4 million, and “Babylon” was fifth with $3.6 million.
