Avoid the blackout this winter: charging stations for electric cars could be blocked

To avoid an energy blackout this winter, owners of electric vehicles could well be deprived of charging at stations at certain critical times.

Winter promises to be complicated for the French electricity network this winter. Between the prices that have exploded and the production constrained by the maintenance of a good part of the nuclear power plants, we will have to cross our fingers to avoid blackouts. RTE, the electricity transmission network in France, has however ruled out the possibility of a total loss of control of the electricity system.

Restrictive measures

However, the manager warns that the coming winter could cause severe tensions on the French electricity network. In the worst case scenario, ie a very cold winter, the Ecowatt program developed by RTE can switch to red. This will then be the signal for the activation of measures to restrict electricity consumption.

Among these restrictive measures, RTE mentions the possibility of blocking access to charging stations during peak consumption. It should be remembered, however, that the manager has no means of forcing the hand of the operators of the charging stations. Nevertheless, we can think that they will be keen to respect the recommendations of RTE, which will warn of the restrictions three days in advance.

In the event of a “red” Ecowatt, RTE also recommends that drivers of electric cars charge their vehicle outside peak consumption hours, during off-peak hours (between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.). Better still, to favor home charging at night, which is also the case for 90% of charging.

By moving the recharges of 100,000 vehicles to off-peak hours, “ this would reduce the average power demand by nearly 0.1 GW between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. “, according to RTE. In comparison, with heating at 19 degrees, we would collectively save 1.3 GW…
