Strange Barbie, a character played by Kate McKinnon and one of the most memorable characters in Greta Gerwig’s film, was inspired by the film’s legendary composer the 70s.
In recently released bonus material for the film, Margot Robbie, producer and protagonist of the film, even stated that Kate’s character was described in the script as a cross between a hairless cat and David Bowie.

The director used the Australian star’s hint to highlight some interesting facts about Strange Barbie’s visual identity:
“Weird Barbie is actually the Barbie you would play with the most. You would brush her hair and decide you wanted to cut it, then see what would happen if you set it on fire and stroked it all over her face.”
“You put her in the splits and try to move her. “I had an idea like, ‘Well, we have to have a Barbie that represents the fate of so many Barbies.’ I wanted her to be funny and wise,” the filmmaker added.
