Barbora Krejcikova wins French Open

PARIS – Barbora Krejcikova won the French Open on Saturday, beating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in three sets.

For Krejcikova (25) of the Czech Republic, the victory was the culmination of a late-flourishing but suddenly explosive career, embarking on a surprising tournament in which so many of the strongest players withdrew, retired or were defeated early in the competition. .

Krejcikova was not selected during this tournament, but was a sentimental favorite and captured the hearts of the crowd with her emotional speeches after the match filled with words of inspiration and tributes to her mentor and role model, former Czech champion Jana Novotna, what at 49 in 2017.

She is best known in recent years for her skill in doubles and she will try to win that championship Sunday with her partner, Katerina Siniakova.

Krejcikova, 25, who was recently outside the top 100 in September, has one of the most versatile playing styles on the women’s tour.

She plays with any number of tricks and turns and has a dangerous moonball backhand that can bounce high and pin her opponents deep into the lane. Strength is not her thing, which makes her unusual in a sport that is obsessed with hitting hard. But what she does not have the strength for, she makes up for in creativity.

In Pavlyuchenkova, 29, she met a former prodigy for teens who had never reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. Despite the frustration, Pavlyuchenkova showed remarkable endurance and played in every Grand Slam between the French Open in 2008 and the United States Open in 2020.

Except for a semi-final in Madrid last month, Pavlyuchenkova’s performances over the past six months have given little hint that she would have the course of her career during this French Open.

Despite Pavlyuchenkova’s advantages and greater reputation, Krejcikova seduced her on the biggest points and played a form of tennis jujitsu that is rarely seen.
