Barcelona lost 1-0 to Rayo in Spanish championship

MADRID (NWN) – Veteran striker Radamel Falcao added to Barcelona’s fight by scoring the winning goal in Rayo Vallecano’s 1-0 win in the Spanish league on Wednesday.

Barcelona’s second defeat in a row left them unbeaten in away matches and only ninth in the standings with 15 points in 10 games. The Catalan club lost to Real Madrid in the classic at home on Sunday.

It was the fifth straight home win for the advanced Rayo, who moved up to fourth place with 19 points in 11 games, two points from leaders Real Sociedad and Sevilla with an extra game. He hasn’t beaten Barcelona at home in almost two decades.

Barcelona missed a penalty in the second half when Memphis Depay striker stopped a shot from Rayo goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski.

Barcelona have not missed five straight away games without a win in nearly 20 years.

In a duel between the old strikers, Falcao took over Sergio Aguero, who has started with Barcelona for the first time this season since his arrival from Manchester City.

Falcao, 35, opened the scoring in the 30th minute in the gap, starting after Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets lost the ball near midfield. The Colombian veteran stepped into the box and passed defender Gerard Piquet with a short cut, then sent a low kick into the far corner, scoring the fourth goal since joining the Madrid club this season.

The 33-year-old Aguero had some good chances ahead of goal, but failed to capitalize on the overall tough Barcelona attack. One of Aguero’s best opportunities was a close-range header, which was conceded in the second half.

Penalty Depay was 72nd after a foul in the penalty area.

Barcelona won consecutive games in all competitions before losing 2-1 to Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday. He won his last 13 matches against Rayo in the league.

Sevilla missed their chance to single-handedly seize the league leadership after a 1-1 draw at Mallorca.

As a result, Julen Lopetegui’s team scored the same 21 points as Sociedad. He won four of the last five league matches, including two in a row.

Antonio Sánchez opened the score for Mallorca in the first half and Erik Lamela equalized for the visitors after the break.

Madrid will have their chance to take the lead on Wednesday when they take seventh place against Osasuna, which have won four of their last six league matches.
