Basilashvili beats Tsitsipas to reach semis at Indian Wells

Indian Wells, Calif. (NWN) – Nikoloz Basilashvili beat No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Friday to reach the BNP Paribas Open semi-finals with the biggest win of his career .

Basilashvili next plays either number 3 Alexander Zverev or American Taylor Fritz, who met in the latter’s quarter-finals at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The women’s semi-finals saw Victoria Azarenka play against Jelena Ostapenko and Ons Jabur against Paula Badosa on Friday night.

Basilashvili, ranked 36th in the world, had a previous biggest win over the then-numbers. 4 Juan Martin del Potro in the final in Beijing in 2018.

The 29-year-old from Georgia defeated Tsitsipas for the first time in three tries. In third place, Tsitsipas has 54 wins on the ATP Tour this year.

Basilashvili made love to win the first set before Tsitsipas cruised through the second set.

In the third, Tsitsipas fell behind the baseline and limped while chasing a shot in the third game. But the Greek shook it up and broke Basilashvili and then took a 3-2 lead.

Basilashvili took a 5–3 lead in three straight games. Tsitsipas hit three aces to go down 5-4. Basilashvili pulled out an ace of his own to set up match point and produced another big serve that Tsitsipas could not return to close the match in just over two hours.
