What was supposed to be a partisan publicity stunt has turned into a COVID mini-superspreader phenomenon that has now infected the White House and Congress, creating more bad optics for Democrats and President Biden.
More than 60 Democratic Texas lawmakers who flew to Washington to protest Republican electoral voting restrictions are now suspected of spreading the coronavirus in the nation’s capital. Half a dozen MPs tested positive for COVID-19.
And of course the White House is evading responsibility and hoping that the media will turn a blind eye to the hypocrisy of the COVID scare.
Masked lawmakers were photographed smiling and rocking it on their chartered plane – a clear violation of government rules that require masks on the plane.
Who’s smiling now?
If it were a group of 60 Republicans on that plane, his critics would be ballistic and accuse him of endangering lives.
The hypocrisy of some on the left is astonishing. During Donald Trump’s presidency he was brutally criticized – impartially, at times – for holding an event on the White House lawn where people were not social distancing or wearing masks.
Dozens were infected in the White House, including Trump himself. Many people in the media reported these cases with glee.
So when Democrats do the same, what do we get from the White House? Silence and dodge.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s top spokeswoman and a White House official were infected with the coronavirus and the infection was traced to the Texas Democratic group. Even Vice President Kamala Harris was to be tested after she was exposed to the virus.
But it’s doubtful we’ll now get a lecture from Pelosi or Harris about wearing a mask.
Like John Kerry, who forgets to wear his mask on a plane, some Democrats have different rules for themselves.
The transition of Texas Democratic lawmakers alternatively comes at a bad time for Biden, who is trying to persuade Americans to get vaccinated and has promised to defeat the coronavirus.
“We know there will be success cases, but as this incident shows, cases in vaccinated individuals are generally mild,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki could muster.
Psaki also said that other “breakthrough” cases of the coronavirus have been reported at the White House, although they were not reported.
These new cases of vaccinated people getting the virus inside the White House are bound to increase fear and panic about the vaccine.
For Texas’s Democratic lawmakers, COVID cases have done little at what is considered a show of force against Republican voting measures. Here’s a bold suggestion: go home.
