Bayern sign Yann Sommer as Neuer’s replacement

MUNICH ( Associated Press) – Bayern Munich has signed Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer from German rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach to cover Manuel Neuer’s injury absence.

Sommer, 34, has signed a contract that runs until June 2025, Bayern announced on Wednesday. Sommer arrived in Munich on Wednesday for a medical check-up and trained with his new teammates before Bayern confirmed the transfer.

Bayern had to flee the market last month after Neuer broke his leg in a skiing accident. The 36-year-old German goalkeeper is expected to miss the rest of the season and be at risk depending on the severity of the injury. Neuer said that there was a fracture in the lower part of the right leg.

“After the loss of Manuel, we had to react. We have big goals for this season and that is why we have signed Jan Sommer, who we consider to be one of the best European goalkeepers,” Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic Told. “Yann has been a goalkeeper for the Swiss team for a long time, he has experience in the Champions League, he is a goalkeeper who plays and he fits very well in our team because of his ambition and his character.

Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann indicated last week that they needed a new goalkeeper ahead of the resumption of the Bundesliga this Friday.

Bayern are said to pay Gladbach some 8 million euros ($8.6 million) to sign their starting goalkeeper in the middle of the season. Sommer’s contract with Gladbach expired at the end of the season and the club risked losing him without charging anything for his token.

Gladbach signed another Swiss goalkeeper, Jonas Omlin, from French club Montpellier as Sommer’s successor.

Sommer was critical of Gladbach losing to Bayern in any of the last four matches between the clubs.

“It is a big and powerful club, we have faced each other many times,” Sommer said. “I know the enormous quality and charisma of this club. I am now proud to be a part of FC Bayern. I want to thank you for

Bayern are aiming to win their 12th consecutive title to extend their Bundesliga record. They will also face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 next month.
