Baylor, Oregon State beat Arizona State 24-10

CORVALLIS, Ore. (NWN) — A week after becoming the first to bowl since 2013, Oregon State remains in contention for the Pac-12 North Division title after a 24-10 win over Arizona State on Saturday night.

The Beavers (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12), a program coming in 1-11 seasons, have come a long way before Jonathan Smith took over as head coach at his alma mater in 2018.

Jack Coletto ignited the Oregon State offense by running 47 yards for a touchdown on fourth and -2 from the Wildcat Formation, giving the Beavers a 24-10 lead with 11:24 remaining. It was the eighth rushing touchdown of the season for Coleto, a former quarterback converted to linebacker in 2019.

BJ Baylor led Oregon State’s offense with a run of 150 yards.

The Beavers were in danger of missing a 17-0 halftime lead.

Punter Luke Locher mishandled a deep snap at Oregon State in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and the Sun Devils recovered in 4th.

This set up DeMonte Trionam’s 1-yard touchdown run, taking a 17-10 lead with 13:56 remaining.

Baylor’s 20-yard run on oncoming position gave the Beavers a spark, and Coletto’s touchdown run proved decisive.

If Washington beats Washington State (6-5, 5-3 Pac-12) at home on Friday, and Oregon State (7-4, 5-3) the next day at Oregon (9-2, 6-2). If wins, the Beavers will play Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game on December 3 in Las Vegas.

Oregon controls its own destiny and will win the Northern Division with a victory over the Beavers. In a three-way tie between Oregon, Oregon State and Washington State, the Cougars would get the nod in the tiebreaker.

Chance Nolan’s 10-yard touchdown pass helped Tre’Shawn Harrison give Oregon State a 10-0 lead with 9:09 remaining in the first half.

Nolan’s 1-yard touchdown on quarterback sneak at 1:59 of the second quarter ended a 17-play, 88-yard drive and extended the lead to 17-0.

Arizona State reached the Beavers’ 8-yard line in their first possession of the second half, but settled for Kristian Zendejas’ 26-yard field to make it a 17-3 game.

Rachad White had 15 carries for 39 yards and added six receptions for 89 yards for Arizona State (7-4, 5-3).

He eclipsed 1,000 yards running for the season in the Beavers’ previous game, a 35–14 win over Stanford. The Beavers finished 6–0 at home for the first time since the 2000 season. Oregon State is guaranteed to finish with a winning record for the first time since 2013.
