The Covid-19 pandemic has forced the business sector to find ways to work remotely. As a result, the Senate of Mexico put on the table the analysis of the implementation of the Reforms of the Federal Labor Law from which the Official Mexican Standard (NOM) 037, focused on remote work and health and safety conditions.
Currently, in Mexico less than 1% work for companies in almost y Less than 12% of companies have some form of remote work or hybrid work and it is mainly the sector dedicated to Information Technologies, which can do this.
In Baja California Sur, There is no formal census that shows how many people work remotely of almost 500 thousand economically active entities registered.
“NOM 37 represents progress in terms of labor rights. Well, now this modality has been formally recognized, it is regulated and it has given rise to new agreements made around a kind of work, which the pandemic inherited from us, and which will certainly continue to consolidate, well, this modality there. positive points for companies and also for workers,” said the general director of the National Employment Service in Baja California Sur, Vladimir Torres Navarro.
Although the official pointed out that the main activity in Baja California Sur is tourism, which is impossible to do at a distance, Torres Navarro points out that the Standard focused on remote work has benefits:
“Workers can spend more time with their families, and avoid the stress of commuting to work; On the other hand, employers can reduce fixed costs, such as electricity and office maintenance,” said the official.
Citizens will expect the conditions of Standard 037 to be met, which applies to workers who perform their activities outside the workplace for more than 40% of their working hours per week.
