- 900 confirmed cases of Influenza since October till date and more than 3 thousand confirmed cases of COVID in this 2023.
- They urge prevention of these diseases by applying the same basic concepts of health protection.
Guanajuato, Guanajuato, January 19, 2023.- The State Committee for Health Safety (CESSA) appealed to the population to prevent respiratory infections by following the recommendations as the same basic concepts.
Measures for people with symptoms of respiratory disease are:
- Cover your nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing.
- Use disposable tissues to catch respiratory droplets or secretions.
- After using the tissue, throw it in the nearby dustbin.
- wash hands
The state head of epidemiology, Fátima Melchor Márquez, informed the members of CESSA of the epidemiological panorama of viral respiratory diseases, highlighting that Guanajuato maintains a close surveillance of endemic channels.
He explained that the most common are Influenza and Covid-19 as we are in the winter season in which various viruses spread and are the main reasons for consultation.
Today in Guanajuato, acute respiratory infections are the number one cause of disease, followed by COVID-19, and complications from pneumonia appear last among the 10 main causes of morbidity.
By the 45th week of the previous year, influenza cases in Guanajuato exceeded the previous year’s behavior.
Fatima Melkor said that although the clinical pictures are similar, it is necessary to review the epidemiological context of each case and rely on the PCR samples that the state laboratory does simultaneously for COVID-19 and influenza.
184 cases of influenza have been detected through 14 influenza surveillance units in the GTO to study which viruses are circulating, however, together with the rest of the units, studies were carried out by various institutions in the health sector and There are close to 900 reported cases. Only 17% have a history of vaccination against influenza.
77% are managed on an outpatient basis and the rest require some type of intra-hospital care.
The incidence of COVID-19 in Guanajuato within this sixth global winter wave of cases and is not comparable to that experienced internationally in early 2022.
The state chief of epidemiology said that Guanajuato ranks 12th in the incidence of active cases, which accounts for 5.5% of the total cases in the country and has 34,561 cases, active cases being people who have fallen ill in the last 14 days.
Till the 45th week of last year, an increase of less than 10% was recorded in suspected, confirmed and positive cases and it has increased to 41% this month.
Still, this is a less explosive case increase than last year, with 3,426 confirmed cases so far in 2023 with 44 deaths.
He reiterates that respiratory diseases are prevented in the same way with the same basic concepts.
Francisco Javier Magos, director of health services, said Guanajuato has 1,300 beds available, 675 with fans and 654 without fans.
In this sixth wave, which has not stopped patients coming in, the characteristic of cases has changed as patients require fewer days of hospitalisation. Of the 4.7% of people currently in the hospital, only .76% have undergone intubation.
