Mexico City – To strengthen the principles of accountability and balance between different government bodies, the Joint Commission of Mayors and Territorial Boundaries and the Local Public Administration of Mexico City Congress received the Mayor of Magdalena Contreras. Luis Gerardo Quijano Morales, who highlighted the work done in matters of security, environment and economic development.
At the beginning of the appearance, Deputy José Martín Padilla Sánchez (Parliamentary Association Green Alliance Together for the City) expressed that it is important to know the actions to protect natural areas and ecological reserves. They addressed the issue of lack of services and regularization of human settlements as well as initiatives to address gender and family violence.
Legislator Ernesto Alarcon Jimenez (PRI) questioned the used and verified budget as well as the issue of unfinished works in the mayor’s office. They noted that the perception of insecurity has improved in a year, although it remains one of the municipalities with the highest criminal acts on violence against women and the family nucleus.
In his speech, Congressman José Gonzalo Espina Miranda (PAN) assured that this regional demarcation focuses areas of opposite economic development, ranging from high-end neighborhoods, housing units, popular and marginal areas. In this regard, he acknowledged that his security strategy has been sector-wise and focussed according to the required profile.
Deputy Miriam Valeria Cruz Flores (MORENA) asked about the actions taken in favor of animal welfare, mainly for dogs and cats abandoned in the streets; as well as to improve the condition of Contreras’s women and those with the greatest social backwardness. He acknowledged that the perception of safety has improved and requested data on the work to be done in this area.

Reporting to legislators, the head of the Magdalena Contreras Mayor’s Office, Luis Gerardo Quijano Morales, announced the actions that were taken in the past year in priority areas such as economic reactivation, public safety, conservation of nature’s resources and care for the environment .
Detailing the results, the official said that they are working in coordination with the authorities to tackle the problem of water supply and shortage and 44 valve boxes have been repaired; He invested 36 million pesos in the restoration of more than 5 thousand meters of pipes and the “La Mesita” water tank was rehabilitated.
Regarding the environment, he said three new nightly garbage collection routes were installed, three mega days of cleanup in the Magdalena River, planting of 30,000 trees on conservation land and 5,000 trees on urban land, and permanent ravine cleaning programs.
Finally, regarding the public security strategy, he stated that Escudo Contreras was established with three main tasks: crime prevention and control, permanent monitoring and training of police forces, as well as their equipment. Furthermore, he announced that the construction of the National Guard barracks has been completed and only the signing of the agreement remains so that it can be used jointly.
