Belize will ban chartered flights Haiti facing alleged corruption cases Haitians are using this type of air transport to smuggle into the Central American country, local media reported this Saturday.
Foreign Minister of Belize, Eamon Courteneyexplained that the decision has been made after recent fare flights loaded with Haitians exclusively arrived at Philip SW Goldson International Airport in the Central American country with only one-way travel.
Courteney also alleged that Haitians do not have reservations in hostels upon arrival in Belize and are then deported from the country to the United States.
Given this, and in collaboration with the Belize Department of Civil Aviation, Courtenay indicated that “We will not let them reach our land”,
He also said he would return Haiti’s provisions to Belize if he did not have a visa.
The officer explained that he would do this because “These people are abused and trafficked by traffickers and we will not allow this to happen in Belize”,
Courtenay, on the other hand, said the repatriation of Cubans who entered Belize illegally creates an immigration and foreign affairs challenge for local authorities.
Belizean authorities cannot repatriate Cubans through another country. And since Cuba is an island, there must be agreements to bring them back directly to their original territory.
Earlier this week, the Belizean Supreme Court dismissed a case involving seven Cuban adults whose basic rights were allegedly violated and ordered the country’s authorities to arrest warrant as soon as possible
