Bendigo Sustainability Group is changing the lives of low-income homeowners by providing them with three kilowatt solar panels for free as part of its Giving Power campaign. With the help of Bendigo Community Health Services, the organization was able to identify those who deserved these solar panels after raising around $55,000.
Bendigo Sustainability Group CEO Melissa Abel expressed the organization’s mission to ensure that all people have the opportunity to live comfortably in their homes without the burden of rising energy bills. The aim of the initiative is to alleviate the stress associated with high energy costs and enable more people to participate in the energy transition.
The first beneficiary of the free solar panels was Bendigo East resident Margaret Crawford. As a single mother who raised her family alone, Crawford spends her time caring for her grandchildren. She was constantly worried about rising electricity costs and used firewood for heat until a hip operation made this difficult. Crawford only used the heat when absolutely necessary, relying on blankets to keep her warm.
It is estimated that Ms. Crawford will save more than $700 per year by installing the solar panels, resulting in a significant reduction in her energy costs. Solar energy consultancy Midland Solar said it was proud to be part of the Giving Power campaign and help those in need in the Bendigo community.
This initiative from Bendigo Sustainability Group demonstrates the organization’s commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to clean and affordable energy sources. By providing free solar panels, the group makes a significant contribution to the lives of low-income homeowners and helps them overcome the financial hurdles associated with high energy costs.
