Santa Clara, Calif. (NWN) — Aly Glenn’s effort from defending champion Santa Clara hit the post and BYU went 3-2 in the Women’s College Cup final on Friday night in a shootout after a scoreless draw.
BYU will take on Florida State for the first time in the NCAA Championships on Monday. The top-ranked Seminoles beat Rutgers 1-0 on Friday.
The shootout was 2-2 when BYU’s Olivia Wade converted her penalty kick. Glenn’s miss then sealed it.
Thirteenth-seeded BYU defeated South Carolina 4-1 in the quarterfinals. The Cougars led the NCAA this season with an average of 3.5 goals in a game.
Santa Clara made their 12th overall trip to the College Cup, defeating Duke 2–1 in the quarterfinals. The Broncos had nine straight NCAA Tournament wins going into the match.
It was a tough, physical game the whole time. Santa Clara goalkeeper Kylie Fouche made eight saves in regulation and extra time, while Cassidy Smith made seven saves for the BEU.
Last season’s College Cup final was played in May after the coronavirus pandemic forced the 2020 season to be postponed. The Broncos won the title on penalties after a 1–1 draw with Florida State.
The Seminoles won the championship in 2014 and 2018.
