Biden: 96 to 98 percent of Americans need vaccination to go back to normal

President Joe Biden told reporters at the White House on Monday that 96 to 98 percent of Americans need to be vaccinated before the nation returns to normal.

“I think we get the vast majority — like what’s going on in some industries and some schools — 96, 97, 98 percent. I think we’re getting pretty close. But I’m not a scientist,” said the president. Said in response to the question of how many people the United States needs to get vaccinated to “get back to normalcy.”

“But one thing is certain: a quarter of the country cannot go without vaccination and we have no problem,” the president said.

Biden made the remarks after receiving a booster shot of a vaccine against the CCP (Communist Party of China) virus. The Food and Drug Administration approved a booster shot on September 22 for people age 65 and older.

As of September 27, more than 55 percent of the US population was fully vaccinated against the virus. This is well below some of the most vaccinated countries in the world, including the United Arab Emirates, Portugal and Malta, all three of which have fully vaccinated 84 percent of their population against the CCP virus.

High vaccination rates in countries around the world have not stopped outbreaks. Israel, where enough vaccine doses have been given to cover 80 percent of the population, has recently recorded one of the most COVID-19 cases in the world, according to the Reuters Global COVID Tracker. The United Kingdom, which has given enough doses to cover nearly 70 per cent of its population, has averaged the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world over the past week.

Biden is due to travel to Chicago on Wednesday to push for more businesses to mandate the vaccine. The president earlier this month ordered his administration to implement a rule making vaccination mandatory in private companies with more than 100 employees, the vast majority of healthcare workers and all federal government employees.

According to a Gallup poll released on September 24, 58 percent support Biden’s vaccine mandate for US companies. Slightly more, 63 percent, support the mandate for healthcare workers.

“Boosters are important, but the most important thing we need to do is get more people vaccinated,” the president said Monday at the White House.
