DOHA, Qatar ( Associated Press) — United States President Joe Biden urged the World Cup-winning USA team to “surprise everyone” ahead of their game against Wales.
The United States Soccer Federation reported on Sunday that Biden called the team at around 11:30 pm (3:30 pm Eastern Time in the US) on Friday night.
“Potus says. That’s where it’s coming from,” USA coach Greg Berhalter said, reading the caller’s ID, according to video excerpts from players who were listening to the call.
Recalling John Fogerty’s 1985 song “Centerfield,” Biden said, “Coach, get me in, I’m ready to play.”
“Guys, I know you’re not the favourites, but I’m telling you, they have some of the best players in the world on their team and they’re representing this country and I know they’re going to play their hearts out.” ” Go out and surprise them.’
Biden continued, “Keep counting on each other, play as hard as you can, for yourself, for your family, for your teammates, and for the country as a whole.”
Berhalter and the players thanked Biden for the call, which came two days before the president’s 80th birthday.
Biden said, “I wish I could have been there to see them, I really would have.” “Let’s get them guys. Just leave the heart out. I know they will, I really know they will.”
Returning to the World Cup after missing 2018, the United States will open against Wales on Monday, face England on Friday and round out the group stage against Iran on November 29.
