Biden welcomes Warriors to the White House

WASHINGTON – US President Joe Biden celebrated the NBA champion Golden State Warriors at the White House on Tuesday.

The Warriors have won four championships in eight years, but they did not visit the White House during Donald Trump’s presidency. He publicly retracted his invitation after team star Stephen Curry said he had no interest in going.

“The Golden State Warriors are always welcome in this White House,” Biden said Tuesday. He also hailed Curry as “one of the great players of our time”.

He said the Warriors “reflect America” with their playing style, “with constant movement, individual freedom and individuality that come together as a team, a team that plays with joy, at its best.” drives to.” ,

The victory came after a rough period for the team after the Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics in a six-game championship series last year.

Although they won the championship in 2015, 2017 and 2018, their dream of a dynasty was shattered when key players were injured and the Warriors fell to the bottom of the league.

Biden said, ‘The last two years have been very difficult. “Critics wondered whether this team would go on forever as the champion team.”

Biden has faced his share of skepticism over the years, saying, “Guys, I know what that feels like.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, a California native and longtime Warriors fan, spoke first at Tuesday’s ceremony.

She said, “As a very proud daughter of Oakland, California, I take immense personal pride in saying that as the Vice President of the United States, Dub Nation is home.”

Harris said he has a custom Warriors jersey that he keeps next to his treadmill at home, calling it “a symbol of grit, determination and teamwork.”

Along with Biden, Harris received a new Curry jersey on Tuesday. He had No. 1, for the No. 1 fan, he remarked, and Biden’s got one with 46, because he’s the 46th president.

Curry said he hoped to see it “on the wall in the Oval Office”.

“Hopefully we can go back and check if it’s there,” he said.

Curry and coach Steve Kerr stayed in the White House briefing room before the ceremony.

Curry thanked the administration for their work in bringing home women’s basketball star Brittany Griner, jailed on drug charges in Russia. They called him “a huge part of our basketball family”.

“It means a lot to know that he is here and safe at home with his family,” Curry said.

Kerr said he participated in a roundtable on gun violence with White House officials and two of his players, Moses Moody and Klay Thompson.

“We’ve learned a lot about what this administration is doing to help create a safer environment in our country,” Kerr said.

Biden signed the gun legislation into law last year, but vowed to continue working for stronger restrictions, including a ban on assault weapons.
