In response to President Joe Biden announcing his vaccine mandate for federal workers, Republican members of Congress have criticized the new rule for violating individual liberties. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) called the mandate “fascist—outright totalitarian.”
“Listen, the President of the United States doesn’t have the authority to order such a thing. We can’t even fire federal employees for not doing their job, but we’re going to fire them for not getting vaccinated. That’s gross. It’s crazy and it clearly infringes on the liberties of every federal worker, and it’s leading to this push-down effect,” Donald said Thursday during an interview with Newsmax.
Biden announced his mandate in a speech Thursday evening, saying, “I am announcing that the Department of Labor is developing an emergency rule requiring all employers with 100 or more employees, who together have more than 80 million.” Employs workers to ensure their workforces are fully vaccinated or show negative tests at least once a week.”
Biden said the mandate would cover health workers and most federal workers. “A total of 17 million health care workers. If you are seeking care at a health facility, you should be able to know that the people you treat have been vaccinated—simple, straightforward, period. Next, I’ll sign an executive order that now requires all executive branch, federal employees to be vaccinated—all.
Donalds said that instead of mandating a vaccine, Biden should start testing and alternative treatments to combat the virus.
“We should be doing several things. Number one, like what we’re doing in Florida under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, is making sure people know about Regeneron and other treatments that can help people get through COVID-19. Number two, we need to adopt not only COVID-19 testing, but antibody testing to test for antibodies, because people have antibodies.
“It’s just like getting a vaccine, that’s the purpose of getting a vaccine, having antibodies. Antibody testing should be a part of it, but we should not make vaccines mandatory,” Donalds said.
Biden called those not vaccinated as politicians, and Donalds said Biden’s decisions were based on fear, not facts.
“I know people are scared. They’re watching news reports, they’re seeing tons of short stories from the media, but we can’t make fear-based decisions. We have to make data-based decisions and Joe Biden isn’t doing that. He is running on politics, he is running on fear,” Donalds said.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Donald’s statements.
Other Republican members of Congress joined Donalds, echoing that Biden’s mandate violates citizens’ personal liberties. Rep. Robert Ederholt (R-Ala.), who has been fully vaccinated, said the executive branch does not have the authority to make such rules.
“These mandates are another example of President Biden taking away personal liberty at the stroke of a pen. Getting vaccinated should be an individual decision. As my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are fond of saying, ‘My body, my choice,'” Ederholt said in a press statement Friday.
The speaker of the House Republican Conference, Rep. Elise Stefnik (RN.Y.), criticized the new need for vaccines.
“Joe Biden’s forced vaccine mandate, affecting more than 100 million Americans, is unconstitutional, illegal and an authoritarian power grab that has become a hallmark of his failed presidency,” Stefnick said in a press release Friday.
Meanwhile, Democrats have remained largely silent on Biden’s new vaccine mandate, but some members have insisted on a vaccine mandate for lawmakers. Nineteen Democrats sent a letter to the US Congressional attending physician, Rear Admiral Dr. Brian P. Monahan, urging them to mandate the requirement.
“We write to you today to express our belief that the US Congress should consider a vaccine requirement for members and staff of the US Capitol Complex or, at a minimum, twice per week tests that verify positive vaccination. are unable to,” 19 Democrats, led by Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-Mo.) wrote in his letter.
