Big bodies in Xalapa: Bodybuilders shine during “Mr. California”

This Sunday the bodybuilding competition “Mr. California 2023″, an initiative born in Xalapa to recognize the work of athletes from Veracruz and other states of the Republic.

Men and women participate in this competition in different categories, from classic bodybuilding, veterans, novice fitness bikini, wellness bikini, etc., where the most famous award is the title of absolute champion of men’s physique , which was obtained by Baltazar Melgarejo from Coatepec., in addition to 8 thousand pesos and the commemorative trophy.

“Exercise is health above all and that is the most important, it gives energy for our daily activities, well-being, it makes you happy,” said Baltazar, who has been exercising for the past 15 years.

At the event, the seventh councilor of the city council of Xalapa, María Guadalupe Márquez Leonardo, invited young people to play sports and participate in this type of activities.

“This is a very good sport and I invite all the young people to join, to sign up, not to stop on this subject of the sport, it is very good, except you leave a lot of vices, the better. good for children.”

In this regard, he reiterated the commitment of the city council to promote sports within the current administration.

“The City Council works in all aspects, as well as jobs, there is also health, culture, sports and all of Xalapa. We are there contributing our grain of sand.”

In the same way, he recognized the work of the creator of this competition, Sergio Aguilar Sánchez, as he said that he continues to develop the Xalapa sport. The same person who since 1980 has been a creditor of various titles such as; G. Xalapa, G. Center of the State, G. Veracruz, and others.

For his part, Aguilar recalled that this event has been held since 2002, where 2023 will be the 21st edition of “Mr. California”.

“I have been involved in this for more than 40 years, so I started promoting internal sports in my gym and that’s how it went, three years later we did it at the local level, the level of Xalapa and then we went to the state level and finally we are where “We are at the national level.”

Alan Aguilar Fuentes, son of Sergio Aguilar and also the organizer of the event, explained that this year they got a bigger participation and a better quality of the performance of the contestants. This is despite the fact that the activity was stopped for several years during the pandemic.

“It affects everyone because there are not so many competitors or so many audiences. With the recovery now it is about 80 percent, we hope that in the coming years it will reach 100 percent.

On the other hand, he invited those interested to compete in future editions, because he emphasized that the interest is growing among all viewers, including children.

“This time we have a greater participation of the youth of the children and we hope that next year there will be more children competing in this sport.”
