Bills season ends in failure against Bengals

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. ( Associated Press) – Adversity finally caught up with the Buffalo Bills, who were dwarfed and beaten as they ended an emotionally drained season two wins shy of their Super Bowl hopes.

Unable to capitalize on the inspirational motivation of teammate Von Miller flashing the Super Bowl trophy they won last year in the locker room, or the surprise appearance of Damon Hamlin at the stadium on Sunday, the Bills faltered in a 27-20 defeat. Cincinnati Bengals in a Divisional Round playoff game.

“Keep your heads up,” coach Sean McDermott told his players after the loss. “As much as it hurts, I am proud of them for the way they have handled themselves this year in the face of ups and downs and adversity.

“They’ll take it with them, but for now, it hurts. I wish it had been a different result.”

Bill appeared subdued from the outset, clearly exhausted after a two-month period in which he was horrified, stunned, when Hamlin went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated on the field at Cincinnati on January 2, disrupting his schedule. Gaya showed fatigue from two winter storms and in a disappointing 34–31 win over Miami to open the playoffs.

Josh Allen’s offense opened with two 3-play-and-out drives for 11 yards.

And Buffalo’s defense, which was bending but not breaking, opened up wide, allowing Joe Burrow to complete the first nine passes he made for 105 yards and two scores as the Bengals took the lead in the first quarter. 14–0 lead with 3:47 minutes to play. ,

Coming out with a limping defense made a huge difference.

Miller has been out of action since November with a knee injury. And Buffalo spent most of the season playing a patched-up secondary without starting safety Micah Hyde (herniated disc) and Hamlin, his replacement. Jordan Poyer, another starter, played through a series of injuries.

“Regardless of difficulties or not, we wanted to see it through to the end,” said left tackle Dion Dawkins. “It definitely hurts a little more to know that this group has gone through so much and that this chapter is closed.”

The Bills, who had lost their previous three losses by a combined eight points, ended their eight-game winning streak. He also made his mark at 13–2 in home playoff games.
