The North American division of BMW issued a notice of suspension of sales of all its models, new and used, in Canada and the United States due to not meeting emission standards in both countries. A decision that is surprising because of its suddenness but is more understandable when the reasons are known.
The company’s statement maintained that After a “quality analysis, BMW took steps to check the material used in a component of the motorcycle’s exhaust system”. And it says: “As a result, BMW of North America has issued a temporary and voluntary suspension of sales of all new and used models except the CE 04 motorcycle,” which is electric.
Finally, the statement explains that the “The temporary suspension of sales has nothing to do with the safety of motorcycles and that owners can continue to use their BMWs normally”. Whatever the problem with the exhaust system, BMW wants to continue to comply with the current regulations in North America, for the same reason that they are ahead of a possible financial fine by identifying a problem and stop selling.
The German company wants to avoid a problem like this one Volkswagen in September 2015 when it was discovered that they installed software to change the results of technical controls to pollute the emissions of 11 million cars with diesel engines, sold between 2009 and 2015.
The Volkswagen group must pay 17.5 billion dollars as compensation to the owners of the affected vehicles and to vendors. In addition, many owners decided to return the models. And in the United States he must paying the Department of Justice a fine of $4.3 billion.
