BMW has confirmed that it will produce its next generation of electric cars, called the Neue Klasse, in the Chinese city of Shenyang. A facility that will start its production in 2026, and which aims to promote the electric line in the world’s largest automobile market.
The new electric models will be assembled at the plants of the BMW-Brilliance automotive alliance. A joint venture with China’s Brilliance China Automotive, a state-owned manufacturer BMW has been operating since 2003.
The German maker on Thursday began construction of a plant that will raise $1,400 million in the first phase, and will be located in the city of Shenyang, which will house a large production facility for batteries in addition to vehicle production lines.
The integration of NEUE KLASSE in China, and the construction of battery factories for sixth-generation electric cars, are milestones for BMW which aims to make electric cars more than 50% of its global sales by 2030.
Currently, the BMW Group produces electronic components and batteries for its electric models at the Dingolfing, Leipzig and Regensburg (Germany) plants, as well as at the Shenyang (China) factory.
In the coming years, BMW will add new battery assembly facilities to this list, such as the factory in Debrecen (Hungary), San Luis Potosí (Mexico) and Woodruff (United States), which should be joined by a new factory in Germany, which will complement its German Will be in charge of supplying electric car plants.
