Buenos Aires ( Associated Press) — In an electrifying definition in two stadiums, Boca Juniors were declared champions of the Argentine League on Sunday, thanks to a 2-2 draw against the Independiente.
Boca celebrated their 35th anointing as champions of the league tournament at their La Bombonera stadium. And they were helped by their arch-rivals River Plate, who beat Racing Club 2–1, reaching the deadline to fight for the title with Team Xeneize.
At home at their Cylindero de Avellaneda Stadium, Racing had the opportunity to advance with a penalty kick in the 90th minute. But Rivers goalkeeper Franco Armani saved Jonathan Galvan’s shot.
After 27 days, Boca added 52 points and Racing 50. reached on
Leandro Fernandez opened the penalty marker for the visitors at 31 minutes on the Janiez court.
Boca knew how to spin it through a header by Guillermo Pol Fernandez in 33 minutes and a free kick shot by Colombian Sebastian Villa in 49 minutes.
The Independent decided to tie after a corner with a goal from Javier Vallejo in the 80th minute.
Boca Racing remained pending the result at the ground, where Miguel Borja’s double in the final 15 minutes gave River the victory and ended the local team’s confusion. It was also Marcelo Gallardo’s last official game as river manager.
“They deserve it,” Boca coach Hugo Ibarra said of his players. “We had to do our job. We had to think about ourselves.”
Ibarra took the reins of Boca last July after the side was eliminated in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 after losing on penalties to Corinthians of Brazil. That result led to the dismissal of Sebastian Battaglia, the coach who led them to the League Cup in the first half of the year.
“We have overcome obstacles along the way,” Villa said. The pure warriors we are. We are a great family”.
Villa is being investigated by an Argentine justice for a rape complaint against his former partner in June 2021. Inquired last June, the striker said he had “consensual” sex with the complainant during a party.
At Avelaneda, Matias Rojas put the academy ahead of a penalty in the 55th minute. Borja scored in the 80th minute and then reversed the result in injury time in the fifth minute.
“I’m a hundred percent proud. It didn’t reach us,” Rojas said.
