Bolsonaro supporters clash with police in Brasilia

RIO DE JANEIRO ( Associated Press) – Supporters of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro clashed with police on Monday, setting several vehicles on fire and allegedly trying to storm the federal police headquarters in the capital, Brasilia.

Images of protesters, many of them carrying the yellow and green Brazilian flag that has become a symbol of Bolsonarism, were broadcast on local television channels and social networks.

The motive behind the protest is unknown, and police did not immediately respond to the Associated Press’s request for comment.

Since Bolsonaro lost the October 30 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his supporters have been in various parts of the country refusing to accept the president’s defeat and requesting the intervention of the armed forces.

Hours earlier, the country’s electoral authority provided Lula and his vice president with an official certificate confirming their victory.

Flavio Dino, future Minister of Justice and Public Security in Lula’s next government, said, “The attempted looting and invasion of the Federal Police building in Brasilia is unacceptable.”

According to local media reports, agents in riot gear showed up at federal police headquarters to provide assistance, while several elements had to use stun grenades and rubber bullets. Police also closed several avenues and streets in Brasília.

In other parts of the country, protesters set fire to at least one bus and were seen lifting metal barricades.
