TAMPA, Fla. ( Associated Press) — Tom Brady apologized Thursday for comparing football to military deployment, the player made a comment on his podcast during an interview with NBA star Kevin Durant.
“I chose my words poorly,” said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback apologizing for what he said on the SiriusXM podcast “Let’s Go! with Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray”
On the webcast, the seven-time Super Bowl winner discussed with Durant how difficult it was to balance his commitment as a hugely successful athlete and his life outside the sport.
“This week I made a comment about playing football and being in the military, and I chose my words poorly,” Brady admitted. “I want to express this about any opinion that people may have, I apologize.”
Durant was a guest on the podcast on Monday.
“I look at football season almost like you’ve been sent on a military mission and it’s like, ‘Here we go.’ There’s only one way to do it… The reality is that you can only be authentic with yourself, right?
“When you say, ‘I want to spend more time doing this,’ at the end of the day, your competitiveness gets the better of you, and even though you want to balance that with work, you’re going to end up the same. Do what you always do, and that’s why you are who you are,” Brady said. “You’re going to ask yourself, how do I do this?”
On Thursday the quarterback was asked to explain his remarks on the podcast.
To be honest, I really don’t want to pay much attention to that… I have a lot of gratitude for all the people who have served in the military”, Brady said.
“In the end, we play a game and the military protects our country,” he said. “They are two different things and I shouldn’t compare.”
