Brave New World: Atlanta Beats Los Angeles 4-2, Enters World Series

Under the leadership of an unexpected hero, the Atlanta Braves return to a place that was so familiar to them before.

World Series.

Eddie Rosario ended an outstanding National League championship streak with a three-hour homer, sending the Braves to the biggest stage of them all, beating reigning Los Angeles Dodgers in a 4-2 victory Saturday night.

The Braves won the 4-2 best-of-seven playoffs, driving out the demons of last year’s NLCS – when Atlanta lost 2-0 and 3-1 to the Dodgers – and faced the AL champion Astros.

Game 1 will take place Tuesday night at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

“This is a great moment in my life,” said Rosario from Puerto Rico through an interpreter. “But I want more. I want to win the World Series. “

The Braves were regulars in the 1990s, winning all in ’95. This remains their only title in Atlanta. The Braves have lost four more streak times in that decade, with a series of post-season disappointments overshadowing a landmark streak that rose to 14 straight titles.

After the Yankees lost the 1999 World Series, the Braves couldn’t even get that far in the postseason.

Twenty-two years of disappointment, 12 playoff games that fell short of the pennant.

It’s finally over.

“We really did it,” said longtime baseman Freddie Freeman, a little bewildered.

Rosario set an Atlanta record and became only the fifth player in baseball history to score 14 hits in a postseason streak. He was an easy choice for the series MVP.

Rosario’s latest hit was by far the biggest in the 30-year-old’s career.

Rosario entered into a lengthy duel with pitcher Walker Buehler, who took the start after a three-day rest after ace Max Scherzer was unable to leave due to a tired hand.

Rosario swung and missed the first two assists. Then he is fouled. Then he took the ball. He then fouls on two more assists.

Finally, he got the one he liked and hit the 105 mph rocket down the right field line, higher and higher, straight like an arrow, until it landed back on the seats below the Chop House restaurant.

Rosario landed a final shot from 361 feet to a highly paid team that won 106 games during the regular season – 18 more than the NL East Braves winner – but failed to become the first re-baseball champion since 2000 New York. The Yankees won their third title in a row.

“We’ve had an amazing season,” Roberts said. “There were two victories left before participating in the World Series. I want the guys to be proud of it. “

Kill the narrative

The Braves will be looking to bury their city’s reputation for postseason adversity in a wide range of sports.

From four World Series losses in the 1990s to the NFL Falcons leading 28-3 in the 2017 Super Bowl, Atlanta is once again on the cusp of an extremely rare feat.

The ’95 Braves remain the city’s only team in four major sports – baseball, football, basketball and hockey – to win the title. Freeman said after losing the fifth game that the history of the city will remain an issue “until we destroy this story.”

That’s four wins from that.

Snit Vs. Snit

Braves manager Brian Snitker will see a familiar face in the dugout opposite during the World Series.

His son.

Troy Snitker is the Astros attack coach.

“The Snitker family is going to have the World Series trophy in our home,” said Brian Snitker. “I don’t know who will have it, but we will have it.”
