Brazil bids goodbye to World Cup with bitterness once again

DOHA ( Associated Press) – Brazil’s hopes of ending a 20-year World Cup win were dashed after losing 4-2 on penalties to Croatia in the quarterfinals.

Neymar scored a brilliant extra-time goal to equal Pele’s record of 77 goals to put Brazil ahead. But Croatia equalized in the 117th minute with a left-footed shot from Bruno Petkovic and won from 11 meters when Rodrigo and Marquinhos missed for the Selecao.

Neymar was not able to execute his shot after coach Tite’s controversial decision to leave him as the last in the line of shooters.

Expectations VS. Result

Brazil arrived in Qatar as one of the title favourites, but Neymar was injured in the opening fixture and there were fears he would miss the rest of the tournament.

Canarinha managed to get his key through despite a 1-0 loss to Cameroon with his substitute, a result that ended a 17-game unbeaten run in group matches and raised questions about the depth of the squad this World Cup. It was also Brazil’s first defeat against an African opponent.

To top it, the injuries were a martyrdom. Besides Neymar, Tite lost Danilo after the first game and Alex Sandro after the second game against Switzerland. Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus suffered injuries against Cameroon and were ruled out.

But Brazil, bringing back Neymar and Danilo, beat South Korea 4–1 in the round of 16 to repeat their favorite status. Neymar scored a goal that put Brazil through to the quarter-finals for the eighth consecutive edition. The dancing of the Brazilians after the goals, including Tite himself, provoked criticism outside its borders.

Expectations ran high and against Croatia, the five-time champions were minutes away from returning to the semi-finals for the first time since 2014. ,

And just like that, Brazil started packing its suitcases.

“It’s like a nightmare. It’s hard to believe this is happening,” said Neymar, who had to be comforted by his teammates as he could not stop crying after the game.

Tite got the sticks to leave Neymar as the fifth auctioneer, a turn that never came. He was questioned for not rearranging the team defensively after moving to the front. He was also criticized for various altercations and for immediately retreating through the tunnel instead of accompanying the players.

Tite will not be required to submit any more accounts. He already announced that his stint with Brazil will end with this World Cup and nothing is going to change that.

“It’s the end of a cycle,” Tite said. “Losing hurts, but I’m at peace with myself.”

It remains to be seen whether the 30-year-old Neymar will continue with the national team. The assailant indicated that this was not the time to talk about his future.

Other veterans who are definitely saying goodbye to the Seleção are defenders Thiago Silva and Dani Alves. At the age of 30, Alves made history as the oldest Brazilian player at the World Cup, surpassing 38-year-old Silva.

There were nine Brazilians over 30 in Qatar, including Casemiro, Danilo and Alisson.

what will happen next

Brazil has not defined Tite’s successor and the national confederation indicated the search process would begin in full in January. It is rumored that Brazil could hire a foreign coach, and Portuguese Jorge Jesus appears to be one of the favourites.

The new coach will have a young squad consisting of Vinicius Junior, Rodrigo, Gabriele Martinelli and Antoni.

Casemiro said, “You have to keep your head up and move on.”
