SAO PAULO (NWN) – Brazilian club Gremio is investigating the destruction of video assistant referee equipment by fans who attacked the stadium’s pitch in Porto Alegre.
The incident happened on Sunday after the team lost 3-1 to Palmeiras and the Brazilian championship sank deep into the relegation zone. Home fans were furious at the VAR system after Gremio’s equalizer was canceled near the final whistle. Palmeiras scored the third goal in stoppage time.
Three supporters broke the monitor, its protective cover and the wires in the set.
Gremio said in a statement on Monday that he “does not agree with the acts committed by a small portion of the fans present at yesterday’s match.” It said she is cooperating with the police and is considering banning the guilty supporters from her home matches.
About a dozen Gremio fans clashed with the police after the match.
The Brazilian Football Confederation has yet to comment on the events at Arena do Grmio.
The country’s sports courts have already forced other clubs to play in empty stadiums for up to 10 matches after fans invaded the previous ground.
Grmio is ranked 19th out of 20 in the Brazilian Championship.
