Brazilian singer, Latin Grammy winner dies in plane crash

One of Brazil’s most popular singers and Latin Grammy winner Marilia Mendonca died in a plane crash during a concert on Friday. She was 26 years old.

Mendonca’s press office confirmed his death in a statement and said four other passengers on the flight also died. His plane crashed between Mendonca’s hometown of Goiânia and Caratinga, a small town in the state of Minas Gerais, north of Rio de Janeiro.

The civilian police of the state of Minas Gerais also confirmed Mendonca’s death, without providing details about the cause of the accident, which occurred shortly before the landing. Photographs and videos show the plane lying just below a waterfall; Mendonca posted a video on Friday afternoon in which she was seen walking towards the plane, guitar case in hand.

The rising star performed country music, called sertanejo in Brazil. She was known for tackling feminist issues in her songs, such as denouncing men controlling their partners and calling for women’s empowerment.

On Friday evening, the news sparked an outpouring of sadness on social media from across Brazil, including fans, politicians, musicians and football players. He has 38 million followers on his Instagram account.

Brazilian football star Neymar, who is a friend of Mendonca, said on Twitter after the news broke: “I refuse to believe, I refuse.” The Brazilian government also expressed condolences.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro also used social media to mourn the passing of “one of the greatest artists of his generation”.

“The whole country receives the news in shock,” he said.

His album “Em todos os cantos” won him the 2019 Latin Grammy for Best Sertanejo Album. He was nominated for the same award this year for his album “Petros”.

Mendonca was also famous for her romantic songs, which often expressed the loss of loved ones.

“You always make me cry, you are unique and eternal,” said fan Michelle Wisla on Twitter.

Mendonca leaves behind a son, who will turn 2 next month.
