Brewers agree to Brian Anderson for 3.5 million

MILWAUKEE ( Associated Press) – The Brewers have signed former Miami Marlins third baseman and outfielder Brian Anderson to a one-year, $3.5 million deal, a source familiar with the deal said Wednesday.

The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not yet been announced. He added that Anderson could collect an additional $2 million in performance bonuses.

The Athletic was the first outlet to report on the acquisition. SportsGrid initially disclosed the terms.

Anderson finished fourth in 2018 NL Rookie of the Year voting and exceeded a .800 OPS in the 2019 and 2020 seasons, but his offensive production has decreased in the past two seasons due to injuries. The Marlins declined to offer him a 2023 contract and he became a free agent.

He hit .222 with eight home runs and 28 RBI in 98 games last season.

Anderson, who turns 30 on May 19, is hitting .256 for his career with 57 home runs, 233 RBI, .341 on-base percentage and .410 slugging percentage.

Being able to play multiple positions should give Brewers manager Craig Counsell more flexibility.

Jess Peterson, Luis Urias and Mike Brosseau rotated at third base with the Brewers last season. But the versatile Urias agreed to play more second base after Peterson signed with the Oakland A’s and traded Kolten Wong to the Seattle Mariners.

The Brewers’ primary starter in right field the previous year was Hunter Renfro, who was traded to the Los Angeles Angels. The Brewers added another corner outfielder by acquiring Jesse Winker in the Wong trade. They also have prospects Sal Frelik and Joey Wimmer, both close to making their major league debuts.
