Queen Charlotte may choose her own diamond, but Penelope is going to be the character that really shines in Season 3 of “Bridgeton”,
The third season of Netflix’s hit series will focus on the love story between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) — and that news is coming from Lady Whistledown herself.
Coughlan announced on Instagram Monday, “Like Lady Whistledown I’ve been keeping a big secret for quite a long time…
The decision to cover up the romance between Colin and “Penn” (who also happens to be the mostly unknown and infamous author of tons of gossip rags Lady Whistledown Society Papers) may surprise fans of Julia Quinn’s romance novels, on which it is based. The show is based.
In the “Bridgeton” book series, each novel focuses on the love story of one of the Bridgeton siblings. The third novel focuses on Benedict Bridgerton and the amazing love he finds. The story of Penelope and Colin occurs in book four, Called “Romancing Mr. Bridgerton”.

Jess Brownell, new showrunner for the Netflix adaptation, explained to Variety Why the show would be different from the sequence of Quinn’s novels.
“I feel like, especially in the last season, there are moments of tension between them where it’s like, Colin almost goes to the line of realizing that Penelope has feelings for her, but there isn’t enough, Brownell said. “Instead of spilling water on that dynamic, we wanted to push it into their season. It really felt like the perfect moment to t-up it. ,
Both have been characters since Season 1. Although the show has never focused on their relationship, it has always been abundantly clear that Penelope’s feelings for Colin could be best described by a heart-eye emoji. Colin, however, has only expressed strong feelings for Penelope’s cousin, Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), and talks about his trip to Greece.
But a heartbreaking scene at the tail end of Season 2—in which Penelope overhears Colin telling her friends that he’ll never court her—feels like fertile ground for a growing love story that continues through the pages of Lady. Promises to be juicy enough to be included in the Whistledown Society Papers.
Here’s hoping Colin eventually gives Penelope the respect she deserves — her dreaded yellow dress notwithstanding.
