‘Bridgeton’s Golda Rochewell says lesbian director urged her to stay in the closet

Golda Rochewell is best known globally as the steely Queen Charlotte on Netflix’s “Bridgeton,” but she said she’d be willing to return her to fame if it meant no longer being her true self. can.

Appearing on the “Just for Variety” podcast last week, the actor recalled his experience working with an unknown gay director who urged him to keep quiet about his sexuality in order to succeed in Hollywood.

“We were talking about being out and about pride and representation and should I say I was gay in the interview, and it was an absolute no-no,” Rochevel said. “I would rather lose my job than not be true to who I am. I would not want to work in an industry that did not accept me. That was not how I was raised.”

Rochevel, who had been in a relationship with playwright Shirin Mula for nearly a decade, said she was “really confused” by the director’s comments.

“My sexuality is really important to me, in terms of existing, being around the campfire and knowing that I’m important,” she said. “I am as important as anyone on the planet.”

Rochewell was honored with the Equality Prize at the 2022 Human Rights Campaign gala in New York on Saturday. She received the award for her work as a symbol of her “passion and dedication to advancing LGBTQ+ equality,” according to HRC’s interim president, Joni Madison.

In his acceptance speech, Rochevel once again shared his memory of a conversation with the unnamed director.

“I thought it was bad advice,” he told the crowd. “Our stories need to be told so that we can all be included in the landscape of storytelling and imagination. You are empowered when you see yourself represented.”

He praised “Bridgeton” for its diverse and inclusive casting, noting that the series “brought a queer woman of color to the living room of me 83 million viewers and counting.”

“It allowed this biracial cisgender lesbian to play the first black queen of England,” she said.
