Brissette replaces Watson as Brown’s starter

CLEVELAND ( Associated Press) – Jacoby Brissette has replaced Deshan Watson on Cleveland’s outfit charts. Maybe it’s only for a short time.

Coach Kevin Stefansky said Brissette would get most of the photos with the Browns’ offensive starting on Sunday. The move was necessitated by Watson’s imminent suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, following allegations of sexual assault and assault by 24 women against Watson.

Watson, who made his debut for the Browns at the start of Friday’s pre-season game against Jacksonville, has been the team’s No. 1 quarterback throughout practice camp.

But he will not be able to play at least the first six games of the regular season – possibly more. Thus, the Browns need to have Brissette ready for the season opener in Carolina on September 11.

“That’s actually been the plan from the start: Let Jacoby make up most of the plays at some point, while still working with Deshaun, Josh Dobbs, and Josh Rosen,” Stefansky said during a video conference call, Referring to the four quarterbacks that the team is.

Watson’s status remains to be seen for now.

The NFL appealed against the six-game suspension imposed on him by independent referee Sue L. Robinson. Former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey, appointed by League Commissioner Roger Goodell, is now in charge of setting the sentence.

Harvey’s verdict could come at any time. There is a chance that Watson and the NFL may strike a deal.

On Thursday, a person close to Watson’s defense told The Associated Press that the three-time pro bowler would accept an eight-game suspension and a $5 million fine. The source spoke on condition of anonymity given the sensitive nature of the matter.
