Britain detects two cases of Omicron coronavirus cases

Health Minister Sajid Javid said on Saturday that two linked cases of the new Omicron coronavirus disease have been detected in Britain linked to a trip to southern Africa.

Omicron, dubbed a “type of concern” by the World Health Organization on Friday, is potentially more contagious than previous forms of the disease, although experts do not yet know whether it is more common than other coronavirus strains. Or will cause less severe COVID-19.

“Late last night, the UK Health Protection Agency contacted me. I was told they detected two cases of this new variant, Omicron, in the United Kingdom,” Javid said in a broadcast clip.

Essex County Council later confirmed on Twitter that a single case had been identified in Brentwood, in the southeast region of England. The council said it pertained to a case involving travel from Nottingham in central England to South Africa.

“We are working with regional and local public health officials who are assessing the situation. All close contacts of these individuals will be followed up and requested to isolate and test them,” the council said.

The health ministry said the two persons and all their household members are being tested again and asked to self-isolate during further testing and contact tracing.

England will also add Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola to its travel “red list” from 0400 GMT Sunday, meaning British and Irish residents arriving in the country will have to quarantine in government-approved hotels for 10 days.

Non-residents will be refused entry. That list already included Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance and Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty will hold a news conference on Saturday “to determine further measures”, Javid said.
