Britain pledges to send anti-aircraft guns to Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine ( Associated Press) — British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised Ukraine 125 anti-aircraft guns and other anti-aircraft technology in a surprise visit to Kyiv on Saturday.

The British President, on his first visit to the Ukrainian capital, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The defense package, which Britain estimates is worth around 50 million pounds ($60 million), comes as Russia is attacking Ukraine from the air, particularly infrastructure facilities, which would lead to blackouts as soon as the winter cold starts Is.

The package includes radar and other technologies to counter the drones being supplied by Iran to Russia. This is on top of a shipment of more than 1,000 anti-aircraft missiles Britain announced a few days ago.

Zelensky, who described the countries as “one of the strongest allies”, posted video of the meeting online, saying “we discussed the most important issues for both our countries and global security.”

“Together we are strong and we will achieve the desired result,” he said in a telegram. He did not give further details.

The video shows Zelensky greeting Sunak at the presidential palace as snowflakes were falling, and the two men talking.

Sunak tweeted: “Britain knows what it’s like to fight for freedom. We @ZelenskyyUa are with you till the end.”

Britain has been one of the staunchest allies of Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion, providing 2.3 billion pounds ($2.7 billion) in military aid to Kyiv.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who resigned in July amid the scandals, was widely praised in Ukraine for his support.

Sunak has stressed to Ukrainian leaders that there would be no change to that position during his rule, although he was seen as reluctant to increase defense spending when he was Treasury Secretary under Johnson.
