Brother of boy killed in Uvalde shooting calls police reaction ‘selfish’

The brother of a boy killed at Rob’s Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, condemned police officers who waited outside a closed door while a gunman shot children and teachers.

“Ridiculous, man,” 10-year-old Javier López’s older brother, Jose Mata, told local news station KHOU 11. “They’re here to protect our community, and they didn’t. They were being selfish, you know?”

Javier was among 19 children killed, as well as two teachers who tried to protect their students. His family described him as a “lovely 10-year-old little boy, just enjoying life”, who was “very flirtatious” and loved to dance.

Law enforcement’s response to the mass shooting has sparked national outrage. On Friday, the director of the Texas Department of Public Safety acknowledged that it was a “wrong decision” for more than a dozen police officers to wait outside the door of a classroom that had teen gunshots and a classroom full of young children. The statement was the latest in conflicting accounts by law enforcement agencies and public officials since news of the shootings broke out on Tuesday.

DPS director Colonel Steven McCraw claimed that Uvalde police officers incorrectly believed the gunman had barricaded himself and that the children were in no danger. But as officers waited outside the door, children inside were begging for help by calling 911 and gunshots were heard in the background.

When a federal tactical unit arrived as a backup, local police ordered them to wait before leaving the room, a US Customs and Border Protection official told reporters. According to the officer, those agents waited for about half an hour and then decided to raid the room.
