There is disagreement over the issue of further arms supplies to Ukraine. To the head of the Bundeswehr Association Wüstner, however, it is clear that not only tank delivery, but every other weapon assigned by the Bundeswehr leads to “cannibalism” of soldiers.
In the debate about tank deliveries to Ukraine, the German Bundeswehr Association has warned against “cannibalizing our troops”. “We understand very well the desire of Ukraine for heavy weapons. We can imagine, for example, the handover of armored personnel carriers from industry stocks,” said Andre Wüstner, head of the Association of Editorial Network Germany . “What is no longer possible from our point of view as a professional union, however, is the delivery of arms and ammunition to the Bundeswehr. Every single delivery leads to the weakening of the Bundeswehr.”
“Many people in the Bundeswehr fear that this policy of further cannibalism of our troops will have a negative impact,” Wüstner said. He related it to “sometimes uncertain material operational readiness”, NATO obligations, as well as training and exercise “as a prerequisite for everything”. Wüstner emphasized: “Our demand is because: no further sale of Bundeswehr stock. And, equally important: the immediate purchase of replacements for the systems sold so far!”
Ukraine is pushing for more weapons supplies from Germany, including battle tanks. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has so far rejected it. Coalition partners Greens and FDP are also pressurizing the SPD in this regard.
FDP defense expert Marie-Agnes Strak-Zimmermann told “Mannheimer Morgan”: “What Ukraine has achieved so far in terms of military strategy was possible only because Ukraine received the necessary weapons from the West.” Now more material should follow – including the Murder infantry fighting vehicle, “with which Ukrainian forces could advance and attack Russian positions in particular”. When pointed out that the chancellor apparently saw things differently, Streck-Zimmermann replied: “That puzzles us all.”
On Thursday, the federal government announced that Ukraine would be given two more Mars multiple rocket launchers and 50 Dingo armored vehicles. In addition, 200 rockets will be delivered. The armed wheeled transporter Dingo is used for patrol and reconnaissance.
