Can I get the flu and COVID-19 vaccines together?

NEW YORK (WNN) — Can I get the flu and COVID-19 vaccines together?

Yes, you can get shots in the same trip.

When vaccines for COVID-19 were first rolling out in the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended waiting 14 days between shots and other vaccinations as a precaution. But the agency has since revised its guidelines, saying the wait is unnecessary.

The CDC and other health experts point to past experience to show that vaccines work as they should and any side effects are the same whether the shots are given separately or in a single visit.

“We have a history of vaccinating our children with multiple vaccines,” says Richard Webby, a flu specialist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Experts say it will be especially important to stay up to date on all vaccines this year.

Since people were masked and staying home, last year’s flu season barely registered. This year, it is unclear how intense the flu season will be with more places reopening.

“The concern is that if they both air at the same time, we’re going to have such ‘twin-monsters,'” Webby says. “The concern with this is that it’s going to put additional strain on an already strained health care system.”

CDC recommends An annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older, and says that ideally everyone should be vaccinated by the end of October. It takes 10 to 14 days for the flu vaccine to be fully effective, so if you wait until the flu has spread, your body may not have time to build up protection. Vaccine options vary by age but include a variety of shots or nasal spray versions.

One caution: COVID-19, the cold, and the flu all share similar symptoms, so if you do feel sick, the CDC tells you to postpone the vaccination appointment until you can to prevent others from getting sick. don’t be better
