Canada announces vaccine mandate for travelers

Canada will require most commercial travelers traveling by air, rail or large ship to be fully vaccinated against falls.

The Government of Canada will also order that All federal employees to be fully vaccinated till the end of October.

Canada has recently started allowing international leisure travelers Across its borders, beginning this week with vaccinated Americans. There are tentative plans to extend discretionary travel to other vaccinated international visitors to Canada in early September.

In the United States, there is currently no consideration in the Department of Homeland Security to mandate vaccines for airline passengers on domestic flights, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Meyerkas told CNN’s Pamela Brown on Friday.

“Not at this time,” he said when pressed on the issue.

At least two US airline executives have said they do not expect vaccinations to be required for domestic travel.

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said on Wednesday that “it’s a government question, but I suspect it won’t happen domestically,” and Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said almost the same thing in May.

Kirby said it is possible that some international travel will require vaccination.

‘An evolution’ of vaccination requirements

Despite Canada having one of the highest vaccination rates in the world— 71% of Eligible Canadians People over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated – vaccination rates have declined in recent weeks.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said in recent months that he did not believe a vaccine mandate would be necessary.

His minister backtracked that Friday, saying his position was “an evolution of the government’s posture”, given new scientific data, adding that the new policy is an incentive to vaccinate Canadians.

Ministers said those who have had been exempted for medical reasons to refuse a vaccine, but were unclear about what would happen to staff who refused vaccination despite mandates.

“You know what Canadians don’t want? Canadians don’t want to go back into lockdown. Canadians don’t want to go back on travel restrictions. Canadians want to move on with their lives and get back to normalcy as quickly as possible.” And you know, it’s not unusual for the government to take on a regulatory role to protect the overall health and safety of Canadians,” Alghbra said.

While this is a comprehensive policy that will be implemented nationally, many Canadian provinces do not currently require health care or education workers to be fully immunized as a condition of employment.

Canadian public health officials confirmed on Thursday that the country is in the grip of a fourth wave of COVID-19, and that the virus is headed for a “strong resurgence”.

Canada has seen active COVID cases double in just two weeks, and hospitalizations have increased by more than 10% in the past week alone.
