The Government of Canada announced this Wednesday a package of sanctions against Iran, the eleventh since October 2022, for its “continuous violations” of Human Rights, directed on this occasion on nine individuals and one entity.
Among the nine people designated by the Canadian government are members of the so-called Morality Police, who were blamed for the death of young Mahsa Amini, who were arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly, which triggered a wave of protests throughout the country.
Those sanctioned include a deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, whose crackdown on protests in the provinces of Sistan and Balochistan left dozens dead, and the board of directors of Paravar Pars, a “key producer” of drones. was used in the “unjustified” Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Finally, the Rajaei Shahr prison, located on the outskirts of the city of Karaj, in the north of Iran, is also included in this new battery of sanctions, which would show “the brutality of the regime” from within its walls, “a record number of state executions”. committed
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said: “Canada’s commitment to human rights is unwavering and we will always give a voice to those who need our support, including the women, men and children of Iran.
“We will continue to do everything in our power to respond to the destabilizing actions of the Iranian regime, which affect not only the Iranian people, but have implications for world peace and security,” he added.
The sanctions join similar measures already announced by the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. With them, assets that people indicate that they can have in any of these countries are frozen, while commercial transactions, or of any kind, with these people and entities are prohibited.
