Cancer man sentenced to 15 years in prison for stabbing death in 2019

Rejecting leniency pleas on behalf of Lew Jefferson’s family and attorney, a Dane County judge sentenced the career criminal and convicted murderer with cancer to 15 years in prison on Friday, but in addition to ensuring that he Will die behind bars.

Jefferson, 60, was last month replaced in 2019 by 30-year-old Amanda J. Woods was found guilty of stabbing to death after agreeing to a plea deal that would allow him to maintain his innocence.

She declined to speak when given an opportunity by Judge Julie Genovese. But before sentencing, Woods’ sister and a woman, who described herself as Woods’ wife and best friend, argued not allowing Jefferson to spend his final days on probation at one of his brothers’ homes in Illinois. As her lawyer Tim Keefer wanted, because of Jefferson’s cancer diagnosis and a stroke that left her wheelchair-dependent.

Woods’ sister, identified only as “LW” in court and in her victim impact statement, sought Genovese’s maximum sentence, or 60 years, and described how her sister’s death affected the woman’s daughter and family. The other members left to struggle financially and emotionally.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, from 2015 to 2016, the homicide and nonnegligent homicide rate in the United States increased by 8.4%. Here’s a look at the cities with the highest murder rates in the country.



“My 12-year-old niece has also lost her childhood due to the death of her mother,” she said. “She is bullied in school for the stories of how her mother died; she attends therapy not only to deal with the loss, but to talk about her anxiety, depression, and anger, which Came out because of her mother. Took it from her so soon.”
