Cash cows are generally regarded as sacred cows in boxing, so Caleb Plant’s appeal to Canelo Alvarez is noteworthy.
Plant called him a fraud.
The accusation led to an open-handed exchange at a press conference in Beverly Hills six weeks ago, with lingering animosity explaining why organizers did not allow fighters to meet face-to-face during the weigh-in on Friday afternoon.
Unable to push Plant again ahead of their 168 pound championship match the next day, Alvarez decided to warn his opponent by paraphrasing Newton’s third law of motion in his second language.
“For every action [there’s] reaction, ”said the 31-year-old Mexican citizen in English.
Alvarez said he initiated the Beverly Hills scandal because Plant insulted his mother while they were nose to nose, but in fact, a relatively unknown rival had already thrown a grenade at him in cyberspace.
In late August, a couple of weeks after Alvarez and Plant agreed to fight, 130lb champion Oscar Valdez tested positive for the stimulant. Alvarez and Valdez are classmates in the gym run by trainer Eddie Reinoso.
Plant posted a message on his Twitter account that read in part, “They are all suspects,” followed by a smiley face with a raised middle finger. Plant also mentioned that Alvarez tested positive for the growth-stimulating substance clenbuterol and stated that he swallowed the prohibited substance while eating contaminated meat.
The World Anti-Doping Agency has concluded that an athlete may have positive results for clenbuterol at low levels after eating contaminated meat.
Not important for plants. It didn’t matter to him that Plant’s team included Victor Conte, a convicted steroid distributor.
And shortly after Alvarez and Plant approached each other at their September press conference in Beverly Hills, Alvarez pushed Plant across the stage.
The plant continued its attack.
“He’s a crook,” Plant said.
He continued, “Was he suspended for six months? So you don’t have to ask me. This is out of the question. I’m not making this up. I don’t want this to be in our sport. I didn’t say that. This is what the commission said. “
Reinoso replied that he called Plant a hilarious insult in Spanish. The coach went on to say that instead of talking, Plant should work hard and win fights.
“I have the courage to work without a positive test result. [for] illegal substances, ”the Factory replied. Why don’t you have the courage to work hard without testing positive for a banned substance?
Alvarez lost him.
“Shut up!” – shouted Alvarez in English.
“Or what?” – asked the Factory.
“You will see on November 6,” Alvarez said.
The exchange sparked excitement over the fight, which might otherwise have difficulty attracting audiences. Plant is losing 10: 1.
Alvarez denied that the fight was a ruse to sell the fight.
“I don’t like to do things like that to warm up the fight,” Alvarez said in Spanish. “I’m not like that.”
Alvarez said of Plante: “I think he is an insecure person. That’s why he wants to start making excuses before the fight. “
Popular fighters like Alvarez tend to be shielded from criticism from Plant.
Directly or indirectly, pranks such as Álvarez generate income for everyone who plays sports. Potential opponents are especially aware of this, who know that making a star angry can cause the star to refuse to give them a lucrative fight.
This imbalance in economic power is the reason that Floyd Mayweather Jr. was not called by opponents for pleading guilty to domestic violence, for which he was jailed for 90 days.
The fight against Mayweather was worth millions of dollars. There was value in the silence.
Gennady Golovkin recalled this. Golovkin and Alvarez tied in September 2017 and scheduled a rematch for next May. The second fight was postponed due to the fact that Alvarez failed a drug test and was subsequently disqualified.
Ultimately, the rematch was pushed back to September 2018. Ahead of the fight, Golovkin and then-coach Abel Sanchez made statements about Alvarez similar to those of Plant. Alvarez was furious. And when Alvarez was awarded a narrow decision, he refused to give Golovkin a third fight, even though he didn’t feel the streak was a clear winner. Since then, Golovkin has not participated in a major promotion.
By mentioning Alvarez’s controversial story, Plant made a huge bet on himself.
“I think most guys fight him feeling like they’re going to lose,” Plant said.
Apparently Plant does not share this sense of fatalism. Alvarez called the upcoming fight the most personal of his career. If he didn’t give Golovkin a third fight – the third fight the public wanted – he probably won’t give Plant revenge, unless Plant somehow defeats him.
