Moneris systems for processing debit and credit card transactions suffered a technical issue on Saturday, causing widespread outage across Canada.
This is what many netizens first reported on X (formerly Twitter). In addition, the company’s website was also down, as noted by the QMI agency.
In an email sent to QMI Agency, Moneris confirmed that it had “an intermittent network outage” that lasted approximately 90 minutes early this afternoon.
“We have resolved the issue and transaction processing is back to normal. Merchants may experience slow transactions as systems resume operations,” said Darren Leroux, director of communications at Moneris.
However, more than an hour passed between the start of the blackout and the company reporting the situation, which several people regretted.
“Come on @Moneris, give us some info on why you’re depressed. Was it a trick? We have businesses to manage and their lack of transparency is worrying. This is exactly why we cannot become a cashless society,” tweeted @Jordan RPALPAL.
For its part, Interac confirmed to TVA Nouvelles that all its services were working on Saturday, despite more than 2,000 people reporting an outage on the Downdetector site.
